Cancer continues to be one of the leading causes of death worldwide, with colorectal cancer, breast cancer, and cervical cancer being some of the most common types. Early detection and treatment are crucial for improving survival rates and quality of life for those affected. In line with this, the Dubai Health Insurance Corporation (DHIC) under Dubai Health Authorities (DHA) launched the Patient Support Programs, including the Basmah program, on 1st January 2018. This article aims to raise awareness about colorectal, breast, and cervical cancer and the Basmah program's initiatives to combat these diseases in the Emirate of Dubai.

Understanding Colorectal, Breast, and Cervical Cancer

  • Colorectal Cancer: This cancer affects the colon or rectum and is often associated with a history of polyps in the colon, a family history of colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, and certain genetic syndromes.

  • Breast Cancer: This is the most common cancer in women worldwide. It forms in the cells of the breasts and can occur in both men and women, although it is rare in men.

  • Cervical Cancer: This cancer occurs in the cells of the cervix. It is often associated with infection with human papillomavirus (HPV).

    Prevention and Early Detection

    • Colorectal Cancer: Regular screenings, maintaining a healthy diet, regular exercise, and avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption can help prevent colorectal cancer.

    • Breast Cancer: Regular screenings, maintaining a healthy weight, regular exercise, and limiting alcohol consumption can help prevent breast cancer.

    • Cervical Cancer: Getting vaccinated against HPV, regular screenings, practicing safe sex, and avoiding smoking can help prevent cervical cancer.

    The Basmah Program

The Basmah program is part of the Patient Support Programs launched by the DHIC under DHA. It aims to reduce cancer mortality through awareness and early detection in the Emirate of Dubai. The program covers colorectal cancer, breast cancer, and cervical cancer and includes the following initiatives:

  • Awareness Campaigns: The Basmah program conducts regular awareness campaigns to educate the public about the risks, prevention, and early detection of colorectal, breast, and cervical cancer.

  • Screening Programs: The Basmah program offers free screenings for colorectal, breast, and cervical cancer for eligible individuals.

  • Support Services: The Basmah program provides support services to those affected by colorectal, breast, and cervical cancer, including counseling, financial support, and assistance with accessing medical care.

Colorectal, breast, and cervical cancer are common and potentially deadly diseases that can be prevented and treated with early detection and proper medical care. The Basmah program under the Dubai Health Authorities is a crucial initiative that aims to reduce cancer mortality through awareness, early detection, and support services in the Emirate of Dubai. Let us all take part in this fight against cancer by taking the necessary precautions, getting screened regularly, and supporting initiatives like the Basmah program. Together, we can create a cancer-free future.
