Critical illness insurance is a policy that pays you a single cash sum if you are diagnosed with one of the serious conditions named in your policy. It pays you directly rather than paying a hospital, which makes it a different product from the health insurance every UAE resident carries by law.
HAYAH, a UAE-licensed life and health insurance provider regulated by the Central Bank of the UAE, offers two versions. Simple CI covers three conditions and requires no medical underwriting. CI Protect covers a longer list and is underwritten individually.

What is critical illness insurance, and how does it differ from health insurance?
Critical illness insurance differs from health insurance in who receives the money. Health insurance pays providers for treatment: the hospital bills the insurer, and the insurer settles the medical cost. Critical illness insurance pays the policyholder a lump sum on diagnosis, and the money carries no restriction on how it is used.
That distinction decides what each product protects. Your mandatory health cover under UAE health insurance law addresses the medical bill. Health insurance does not address the mortgage that still falls due during six months of treatment, the income lost while you are not working, the cost of a spouse reducing their hours, or travel for a second opinion abroad.
A critical illness payout covers those. One diagnosis, one payment, and the policyholder decides what the money does. That is the entire mechanism, and it is why the two products sit alongside each other rather than replacing one another.
Which illnesses does critical illness insurance cover in the UAE?
Critical illness insurance covers a defined list of named conditions, not illness in general. Two elements set the boundary of any policy: the list of conditions, and the severity definition attached to each condition on that list.
The second element receives less attention than it deserves. A policy naming 30 conditions and a policy naming 35 are not equivalent documents, because each condition carries a medical definition that specifies how advanced the diagnosis must be before the policy pays. Cancer is the clearest case: policies differ on whether early-stage and in-situ diagnoses qualify. The condition count is the headline. The definitions are the cover.
Across the UAE market, cancer, heart attack and stroke appear on the condition list of every policy we reviewed in July 2026. Longer lists extend into organ failure, major organ transplant, paralysis, coma, bypass surgery and multiple sclerosis. HAYAH's two plans sit at opposite ends of that range, and the section below sets out which one suits which circumstance.
Read the definitions before the count. Ask the insurer for the condition definitions in writing, and check how each policy treats early-stage diagnoses.
Simple CI or CI Protect: which HAYAH plan fits?
The two plans differ in three ways: how many conditions they cover, whether medical underwriting applies, and how the premium is set.
Attribute | Simple CI | CI Protect |
|---|---|---|
Conditions covered | Cancer, heart attack, stroke | A longer list of conditions, confirmed at quotation |
Medical underwriting | None at application. Pre-underwritten product | Individually underwritten |
Premium basis | Plan-based across seven tiers, Bronze to Titanium | Calculated on customer profile, including age and gender |
Additional benefit | Second medical opinion and assistance | Confirmed at quotation |
Suits | Applicants who want cover in place quickly, and applicants who expect underwriting to go against them | Applicants who will pass underwriting and want the widest condition list |
The decision rule is straightforward. Choose CI Protect when your health history is clean and breadth of cover is the priority, because a longer condition list protects against a wider range of diagnoses. Choose Simple CI when speed matters, or when a previous diagnosis, a chronic condition or your age makes individual underwriting likely to produce a loading or a decline.
Simple CI covers three conditions where fully underwritten policies cover many more. That is a real difference and it is the trade for skipping underwriting. What Simple CI offers in exchange is access and certainty: a plan-based price, no medical assessment, and cover on the three conditions that appeared on every policy we reviewed.

How much does critical illness cover cost in the UAE?
Simple CI is priced by plan tier rather than by individual medical assessment, which means the premium attaches to the plan you choose rather than to your health history. Seven tiers run from Bronze to Titanium, and the sum insured on each tier drives the premium. An advisor confirms the current rate for the tier you want.
CI Protect is priced on individual circumstances, including age and gender, so no published rate applies. A quote is the only accurate figure.
Two points on cost across the market. Premium rises with age, which means the same cover costs more the longer the decision waits. And a low premium on a small sum insured protects less than the number suggests. Match the sum insured to what the money needs to do: outstanding debt, months of income for you and any dependents, or a specific treatment cost.

Do you need critical illness cover if you already have health insurance?
Yes, if your concern extends beyond the medical bill. Mandatory health insurance in the UAE is comprehensive on treatment. The policy covers inpatient care, outpatient consultations, diagnostics, prescriptions and specialist referrals, and for many residents it settles the clinical cost of a serious diagnosis in full. On that job it does the work.
What it does not do is replace income or meet costs outside the treatment pathway. Health insurance pays no benefit for a mortgage instalment, a school fee, a reduced salary during recovery, or a family member giving up work to provide care. Those costs arrive at the same time as the diagnosis and they fall outside every health policy.
Critical illness cover exists for that gap. It is not a second health policy and it is not a substitute for one. What should you check before you buy?
Five items decide whether a critical illness policy pays when you need it. Check each one in the policy document rather than the brochure.
Condition definitions. The severity threshold attached to each named condition, and how early-stage diagnoses are treated.
Survival period. The number of days you must survive after diagnosis before the benefit pays.
Waiting period. The interval between the policy starting and cover taking effect.
Age limits. The maximum age at entry, and the age at which cover ends.
Pre-existing conditions. How anything diagnosed before the policy start date is treated, and what must be declared at application.
Can you get critical illness cover after recovering from a serious illness?
Whether you can get cover after recovering depends on the product structure, and the two structures behave differently. An individually underwritten policy assesses your medical history at application, so a previous diagnosis is taken into account and can result in an exclusion, a loading on the premium, or a decline.
A pre-underwritten product such as Simple CI applies no medical underwriting at application. That changes the process rather than guaranteeing an outcome, because policy terms still govern what is covered and pre-existing conditions are still subject to the terms of the contract.
Anyone in this position should put the specific history to an advisor and get the answer in writing before paying a premium. Declaring a known condition accurately at application matters: an inaccurate declaration can void a policy at the point of claim, which is the worst moment to discover it.
How to take out critical illness cover with HAYAH
Four steps, and the first one is the part most people skip.
Decide what the money is for. Outstanding debt, replacement income for a fixed number of months, or a specific treatment cost. That figure sets the sum insured.
Decide which structure fits. Underwritten cover for breadth, pre-underwritten cover for access and speed.
Speak to an advisor with your age and medical history to hand. For CI Protect this produces the quote; for Simple CI it confirms the tier.
Read the condition definitions and the declaration section before signing.
Critical illness cover sits alongside life cover rather than replacing it, since one pays on diagnosis and the other pays on death. Our guide to life insurance in the UAE explains how the two work together.

Frequently asked questions
What is usually covered by critical illness insurance?
Critical illness insurance covers a defined list of named serious conditions. Cancer, heart attack and stroke appear on every UAE policy we reviewed in July 2026. Longer lists add conditions such as organ failure, major organ transplant, paralysis, coma and bypass surgery. Each condition carries a medical definition that sets the severity required for a claim.
What are the top three critical illnesses?
Cancer, heart attack and stroke appear on every UAE critical illness policy we reviewed in July 2026, and they form the entire cover under HAYAH's Simple CI plan. Longer policies keep all three on the list and add further conditions around them, which makes these three the common core of the UAE market rather than an optional extra.
How much does critical illness insurance cost in the UAE?
Cost depends on the sum insured, your age, and whether the policy is underwritten. Plan-based products attach the premium to the tier you choose, so the price does not vary with your health history. Individually underwritten products price on age, gender and medical history, so a quote is the only accurate figure.
Can you take critical illness cover without health insurance?
Critical illness cover is a separate policy from mandatory health insurance and pays a different kind of benefit. Health insurance remains a legal requirement for UAE residents regardless of what other cover you hold, so critical illness cover is an addition to it rather than an alternative.
Can you add critical illness cover to an existing policy?
That depends on the policy you already hold. Some life policies accept critical illness cover as an addition, while other critical illness products are written as standalone contracts. Ask your insurer which applies to your policy and whether adding cover triggers fresh underwriting.
What are the main limitations of critical illness insurance?
Four limitations matter. Cover applies only to conditions named in the policy. Each condition carries a severity definition that must be met. A survival period applies between diagnosis and payment. And cover ends at a maximum age. A policy pays once on a successful claim, so it is protection against a defined event rather than ongoing income cover.
